SpineCor treatment for Juvenile Idiopathic Scoliosis: SOSORT award 2010 winner
Christine Coillard, Alin B Circo, Charles H Rivard
Scoliosis , 2010, DOI: 10.1186/1748-7161-5-25
Abstract: For this study, 150 juvenile patients were treated by the SpineCor orthosis between 1993 and 2009. Of these, 67 patients had a definite outcome and 83 are still actively being treated. To determine the effectiveness of the brace the OUTCOME criteria recommended by the SRS was used. The results from our study showed that of the 67 patients with a definite outcome, 32.9% corrected their Cobb angle by at least 5° and 10.5% had a stabilization of their Cobb angle. Within the patients with a definite outcome, 37.3% of patients where recommended for surgery before authorized end of treatment. For this group of patients, surgery was postponed. Looking at the stability of the curves 2 years after the end of the treatment, we found 12.5% of the patients continued their correction without the brace being used and 71.4% remained stable. From our study we can clearly see that the effectiveness of the SpineCor orthosis in obtaining and maintaining the neuromuscular integration of the corrective movement can be achieved effectively for juvenile patients. Over 75% of all patients that finished the treatment had remained stable with a few continuing to correct their Cobb angle after the use of the SpineCor orthosis was discontinued. Our conclusion from this study is that the SpineCor orthosis is a very effective method of treatment of juvenile idiopathic scoliosis. The results obtained also indicate that treatment outcomes are better with early bracing. Most encouraging perhaps is the fact that the positive outcome appears to be maintained in the long term, and that surgery can be avoided or at least postponed.Despite the great progresses made over the past years in the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis, little has been reported of juvenile idiopathic scoliosis as an entity and all the previous publications have contradicting results with respect to the sex incidence, types of curves and treatment results [1].Juvenile idiopathic scoliosis is classically defined as scoliosis that is fi

Abstract: All types of professionals (specialty physicians, and allied health professionals) engaged in CTIS have been involved together with a methodologist and a patient representative. A review of all the relevant literature and of the existing Guidelines have been performed. Documents, recommendations, and practical approach flow charts have been developed according to a Delphi procedure. A methodological and practical review has been made, and a final Consensus Session was held during the 2011 Barcelona SOSORT Meeting. The contents of the document are: methodology; generalities on idiopathic scoliosis; approach to CTIS in different patients, with practical flow-charts; literature review and recommendations on assessment, bracing, physiotherapy, Physiotherapeutic Specific Exercises (PSE) and other CTIS. Sixty-five recommendations have been given, divided in the following topics: Bracing (20 recommendations), PSE to prevent scoliosis progression during growth (8), PSE during brace treatment and surgical therapy (5), Other conservative treatments (3), Respiratory function and exercises (3), Sports activities (6), Assessment (20). No recommendations reached a Strength of Evidence level I; 2 were level II; 7 level III; and 20 level IV; through the Consensus procedure 26 reached level V and 10 level VI. The Strength of Recommendations was Grade A for 13, B for 49 and C for 3; none had grade D.These Guidelines have been a big effort of SOSORT to paint the actual situation of CTIS, starting from the evidence, and filling all the gray areas using a scientific method. According to results, it is possible to understand the lack of research in general on CTIS. SOSORT invites researchers to join, and clinicians to develop good research strategies to allow in the future to support or refute these recommendations according to new and stronger evidence. The international Scientific Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT), that produced its first Guidelines d
An Empirical Study on the Pass-Through Effect of RMB Nominal Effective Exchange Rate on Import Price  [PDF]
Alin Xia
Modern Economy (ME) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/me.2017.82012
Abstract: Starting from ERPT model, the paper decomposes RMB nominal effective exchange rate published in BIS into level and volatility, and analyzes the pass-through effects of RMB nominal effective exchange rate into import price from level and volatility under GARCH model. The conclusions are that, the pass-through effect of RMB nominal effective exchange rate to the level of import price is not complete, and the volatility of RMB nominal effective exchange rate has a negative impact on the volatility of import price and also has a time lag. Error correction mechanism shows that it needs about 8 months for import price to return to a balanced level after the changes of exchange rate.
Fixating the World’s Most Caring Cornerstone: Heidegger on Self-Sacrifice
Alin Cristian
Indo-Pacific Journal of Phenomenology , 2008,
Abstract: Prior to having its authenticity and transparency examined the openness of human existence may be said to need preservation as is, regardless of its receptivity and responsiveness to the truth of Being. Paradoxically, in self-sacrifice the fulfilment of Dasein’s ownmost potentiality-for-being is dependent upon a most radical disowning of itself. This investigation approaches self-sacrifice on the basis of its analogy with the creation of the work of art – as the peculiar fixation of the existing, already disclosed world of everydayness within Dasein’s final absence. Finally, the suggestion is made that the incommensurable greatness of the heroic self-sacrifice needs to be itself preserved from the degradation brought about by massive and compulsive reproduction. THE EUROPEAN UNION’S QUEST FOR ENERGY POLICY: A GEO-ECONOMIC APPROACH
Alin Codoban
Romanian Journal of European Affairs (RJEA) , 2011,
Abstract: The European Union’s external energy policy architecture is very important for further energy security and economic development. European normative power on its neighbours represents the most efficient way of integrating neighbouring energy markets, with the EU’s emerging internal market and, in perspective, through economic interdependence and complementarities, there are chances of creating an European geo-energy space. EU’s tools for shaping the geo-energy space are becoming more effective in an extended European economic area that would allow it to act as the main actor in a multilateral interconnected system of energy producer and transit countries. The result of the paper is materialized in a new paradigm for EU’s external energy policy, which can provide future security of supply through market institutions and an active economic diplomacy in the resource energy countries.
Transferuri valorice si atitudinale transgenerationale in Romania post-comunista
Gavreliuc, Alin
Romanian Journal of Applied Psychology , 2010,
Abstract: Our paper has grouped the conclusions of research organized between 2002-2010 on 1841 subjects from different generational strata in contemporary Romania. The investigation realized on representative samples has made on three age groups, conventionally designated as ‘generations’: ‘50th generation’ (subjects socialized in communism, profoundly integrated in the ‘old world’), ‘35th generation’ (subjects secondary socialized in communism, social integrated in the ‘old world,’ which obtain in present an influent symbolic position in the social network), and the ‘20th generation’ (subjects social nonintegrated before 1989, which preserve a neutral memory about the pre-revolutionary period and assumes today a strategies of social integration in a totally different social reality). The applied psychological instruments assess the following dimensions: independence-interdependence (Singelis); self-esteem (Rosenberg); locus of control (Rotter); self-determination (Sheldon, Ryan, Reis); and the values matrix provided by Schwartz Value Inventory, combining a quantitative methodology (trough the above instruments) with a qualitative one (oral history interviews). Our study is focused on the two concurrent hypotheses: the attitudinal changing hypothesis (the change of fundamental social attitudes) and the la longue durée” hypothesis (the persistence of fundamental social attitudes), examining the practical consequences of confirming la longue durée” hypothesis. At the same time, we have briefly configured the identitary portrait of one of the most traumatic generation for the communist period (‘decre eii’, ‘the children of the Decree’ 770/1967 – the Ceausescu’s decree for interdiction abortion), underlining the presence of a transgenerational axiological and attitudinal patterns, characterized by low level of social commitment and assistential values.
Mir Masoom Ali: A Distinguished and Dedicated Statistician Who Never Gets Old – Even at Seventy-Five

Pakistan Journal of Statistics and Operation Research , 2012, DOI: 10.1234/pjsor.v8i3.509
Abstract: I first met Distinguished Professor Dr. Mir Masoom Ali at the International Conference on Mathematics and Statistics held in Athens, Greece in 2007. He was there as an invited speaker and he also chaired my session. After my session we had a chance to chat on our way to the restaurant where the banquet was held. Even though it was the first time we hadmet, he was very kind to me. He was there with his wife Firoza (Leena) Ali. They looked great together. Family is the most important part of our lives. It was immediately apparent to me that Professor Ali, apart from being an outstanding statistician and a great teacher, is also a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. We have always kept in touch since our first meeting. I am very lucky to have had a chance to recently collaborate with him in a research paper. It is also a great honor for me to have been asked to serve as a guest editor for this special issue and to be able to be part of this undertaking to celebrate Dr. Ali’s 75th birthday anniversary. To some people, age is only an indicator of the year they were born but inside they feel much younger. Professor Ali is onesuch person who not only looks very young both physically and emotionally for his age but who also has the personality and mentality of a very active younger person. That is why I have chosen the title "Mir Masoom Ali: A Distinguished and Dedicated Statistician Who Never Gets Old - Even at Seventy-Five."
